For some couples, sperm washing may be required as part of their fertility treatment journey. If sperm washing is something you are interested in or may require, our London based fertility specialists will be happy to talk you through the process and what it entails, and offer guidance on when it may be suitable.

Sperm washing is a process where sperm cells are separated from the rest of the semen fluid. This may be required as part of intrauterine insemination (IUI) or IVF treatment, in order to remove other elements from the semen which may have an adverse reaction in the uterus. For couples pursuing fertility treatment, using IUI washed sperm may sometimes help increase success rates.

Sperm washing can also be beneficial for helping remove infectious cells from semen, in order to prevent them being passed on to your partner and resulting pregnancy.

Leading London fertility clinic King’s Fertility is one of the few fertility units in the UK that can offer sperm washing for HIV positive patients when used during either IUI or IVF treatment. This is utilised to decrease the chance of passing on the infection to the partner and resulting pregnancy. IUI washed sperm can then be stored and prepared for use in the next step of your fertility treatment as required.
